I'm liking this 1-3-1 defensive set up. It has limited Sabres offense so far.

Man it's only the 1st game of the season and Lindgren's body probably looks like he's played 50+ games already. What a warrior!!

Game Observations 1) That was a pleasant surprise after how they looked in the preseason games. 2) Nice to see them have a defensive system. I hope they have the discipline to stick with it. 3) I think all the young players had good games. Lafreniere really needed a good start this year.

Also nice to see them being first to the puck and being more quick and decisive with it.

Nice to start with a solid win! No 6-5 shootout where the defense looked brutal. I also like that 1-3-1 neutral zone system

That was about as good a first game as you could hope for. Liked what I saw from the entire team overall, especially defensively.

Pleasently surprised by how they played, good game overall. Shesti hardly had anything to do all game.

Considering I expected them to sleepwalk through a road game after the way looked in camp I am astounded. That was no bunch of clowns they shut down. Buffalo has a strong offensive team but you wouldn't have known it from watching this.
Maybe Buffalo watched the Rangers in pre-season and expected that team to show up?

The refs lost control of the game early. It started with the kreider board and finally led to Buf and Greenway taking matters into their own hands. Shorty thereafter Buffalo didn't care anymore and the refs seized the game back.
I'm glad I watched very little of the pre season. The new system has impressed me and astounded they're figuring it out so soon. We've not seen this type of Ranger play in a long time. The era of Ranger goalies consistently saving their bacon is hopefully nearing an end.

Laffy deserves every bit of praise for the good game that he had, but it's only one game. He needs to show consistency throughout an entire season in his play and his production, something that he has yet to do as a pro.

I think for the most part, he's lacked that internal spark/'arrogance'/desire to impose his will on the play.
When we look at the true snipers of the game and the players who make a difference on the ice in one way or another, they have that 'spark', no matter their size and strength.

Case in point : the little guy on the Sabres who smashed Black Wheeler into the boards (near the benches) the other night.
That's the kind of attitude I'd love to see more Ranger players have. Fearlessly imposing their will.
(The just might start to develop that under Laviolette. Time will tell.)
