No doubt the probability of losing the chance to draft Trevor Lawrence is Franchise altering. That said,I'm a firm believer things happen for a reason. Before I proceed, I ask myself if if the future of Justin Fields can be any better than that of Sam Darnold? Both are impressive athletes who excelled during their NCAA days. For the first time in his short career Sam executed a winning play completing a solid mistake free performance against arguably the best all around defense in the League . Subtle as it may have been his game clinching dump pass to Frank Gore was that of a poised developing QB.
Call it a baby step, but along the way there have been flashes of brilliance. Perhaps fate is giving us a message. Rather than starting from scratch with Justin Fields who is not without flaws why not display patience and finally surround the kid with players who give him the best chance to succeed? Like many,I all but gave up on Darnold, but that was with the vision of Lawrence in Green and White. Stick with Sam! That will give Douglas an opportunity to trade down a few slots, adding draft capital allowing for a super prospect such as Alabama's WR DeVonte Smith and Lawrence's teammate RB Eteinne or Alabama's Najie Harris. With the 11+ picks our GM can surely fill other needs on both sides of the ball.
Darnold is not yet 24 years old. There have been other great QB's who were slow developers. Never a fan of Eli Manning he admittedly went on to have a solid borderline HOF career. It was in his 3rd season when fans were burning his Jersey but in his 4th season he became the darling of the metropolitan area.
