Whitey Born and raised in the same neighborhood as me in Astroria Queens. His Mom and Dad live near us. Great people, and Whitey was a great guy. Use to hang out in his Uncles Bar in Astoria.
RIP Whitey,thanks for the memories, my friend.

Just the other day I was talking about the surviving Yankees players from the Golden era. Perhaps I missed a couple but Tony Kubek,Bobby Richardson and 'The Chairman Of The Board' were the only members who came to mind. Now there are only two! Whitey was the epitome of a craftsman who led the way for Randy Jones,Greg Maddox and Tom Glavine to name a few.
Twenty years ago when the collectable,memoribilia craze was in full flight I was honored to meet him at a sports promotion. It was there I found the same polished gentleman he was on the field of play. There is a 'time' for all of us and after 91 wonderful years Edward Ford reached his end. May he receive his Just Reward and Rest In Peace.

If anyone wants to read a great book about those guys And the Yankees, And My man Billy, you have to read Billy Martin: Baseball's Flawed Genius Book by Bill Pennington, Yankees beat writer of the NY Times. The best book of those days I ever read. Amazing. And you will realize why Billy who came from poverty, and IMO, the best Mgr. In baseball between the white lines. |
