DJ, Torres, Briton, Judge, Paxton, Stanton, Severino, Kahnle, Kyle Higashioka. All out with injuries.
You hear the same thing today in all sports, they are bigger, and Stronger then in the old days. I hear that all the time when I go back to the old days comparing them to today's game. And I hear the same thing about Hockey from today's generation. They are bigger and Stronger today. And yet even in Hockey there are always all these injuries. In those old days of Baseball and Hockey, players were expected to play entire seasons. Hockey games were much more physical, and you weren't given open ice, you had to earn it. And they played hurt. Not like today, the game is you can't touch me I am Sterile. In Baseball pitchers were expected to go nine innings or more and complete games. Yankees had 4 starters, Whitey Ford, Ali Reynolds, Vic Raschi and Eddie Lopet, and one reliever in the bull pen. Joe Page, nicknamed Fireman. . Today, all you hope is a starter gives you 5 innings. You have middle relief, right-handed and left-handed specialist. Set up man and then the closer. Today they are not use to going all out on the mound and in the field, or at bat, they are babied from the minor leagues up to the major leagues that's the way they are trained. And today in all sports its pumping iron and lifting weights. Their bodies may be bigger, and have more muscles, but I'll take the old days any day. Today they make millions in the old days some baseball players had side jobs in the off season. And they never got hurt like they do today. Blame it all on today. Who ever heard of playing 7 inning games in a double header? Or putting a man on 2nd base in extra innings. Give me a break. What's this College Girls Softball.
You never heard of giving guys days off for a rest, In the old days. Today they are spoiled millionaires.

You never heard of giving guys days off for a rest, In the old days. Today they are spoiled millionaires. Athletes are bigger, stronger, faster and better trained then at any other time in history. It is really pointless to compare the different eras because everything is different today then it was then. The league and the teams have to deal with the players union which is part of the problem. Back in the day it was play good or else someone else will get the job. Today they have contracts and clauses baked in as well as the unions will have some say in the matter. At the very least the player will be paid for nothing. You are also dealing with all positions in all sports have become so specialized now they don't go about it the same way they did back in the day. Think of how many pitchers who's career got cut short or diminished because they wore out their arm or kept throwing hurt. I doubt the old timers knowing what they know now and how things are done today, They would have done the same thing. Back in the old days guys would get a break because someone heard they can throw or hit the shit out of the ball and they got a shot. Todays athletes are not found on the street or heard about. They are bred to do what they do and they got connections. The only suprise to them would be if they did not make it. The old timers left their blood on the field and did not spare themselves any abuse. For what they were paid and how they were treated and seeing what it got them I doubt you would have seen them sacrifice themselves like they did if they were to do it all over again. I have a resturaunt in my town that used to have Don Larsen show up several times a year. I think he was related to them and had family in the area so every time he came about he would hang out at the resturaunt and sign autographs. He just passed away this year in January at 90. I have in the last 24 years met up with him at that resturaunt over a dozen times and combined probably have 10 hours talking to him about anything from baseball to what is his favorite food to his grandchildren. Here you have a legend of the game who did something so few have done and in 2012 he had to sell his jersey that he wore during his perfect game to pay for his grandkids college. I remember him saying if they knew then what people know now it would have been different. He also said all BS aside that most of his generation in comparison to today could not compete today in how it has evolved. Nobody trained back then and people ate what they wanted. Guys got shitfaced drunk and showed up to games hungover. It is no knock on anyone or saying one is better then the other. The old timers wrote the book and laid the ground work and today it has grown to be unrecognizable to what it was for them. Guys back in the old days were happy to make a living playing ball vs working in a steel mill or construction site. Today these kids go into expecting that they will make big forever money. Don Larsen had to get a job to pay the bills when he was done with ball. His name and accomplishments allowed him to pocket some occassional revenue signing autographs. But it is a far cry from what todays athletes get afforded when their days are over. I see what your saying though and I agree and probably feel the same way. The problem is probably more us then it is anything else because todays generations don't see it the same way as we do and they did not have to do what we had to do to get by. I know my kids have had it better then I did growing up. My daughter got a new car whe she got her license and I got an old piece of crap that barely ran. In all fairness though the younger kids have to grow up in a more fucked up world so they don't have it all good.

I still will take the days of Willie, Mickey and the Duke, along with Joe D, and Ted Williams any day over today. And when it comes to Hockey I will take the real game of hockey the original 6 over today's game and players, anytime.
I seen them all, and I will take the days of all sports and players in the 50's. Any day any time, and I don't buy that cop out of bigger and Stronger.
I will put up Mr Hockey Himself Gordie Howe and Maurice the Rocket Richard against anyone of today.

They're all dead, Tony. Probably cuts down on their mobility.
I still think players today put too much emphasis on weight lifting. It damages tendons and ligaments.

Guys like Boog Powell and Harmon Killegrew only lifted a beer after the game.
They took after Babe Ruth.
But I think of a guy like Ichiro Suzuki who spent most of his time stretching his muscles out. He never got hurt.
All the batters today want to hit the ball 500 feet and all the pitchers want to throw 110 miles an hour.

And, Tony, not to belabor the point but:
The pattern is unmistakable.

And I will add one more thing Bob. Judge has never been the same since the HR Derby. That HR Derby is a recipe for getting hurt. Its all entertainment, and if I own the Yankees, you can bet I would not allow any of my players to compete in the HR Derby.

I agree about the HR derby in general.
I can't blame that for him getting hit in the hand with a fast ball or diving for a fly ball and cracking a rib and puncturing a lung.... although something about the whole story rings hollow.

They may be bigger, faster, stronger and better trained. But they ain't got no heart and they are all unionized soy boy pussies compared to the old timers.

So they should be slaves to the owners so you can maintain your fantasies? Sorry. Not buying it.

We are talking about the players and their dedication, and athleticism of the game, not talking about any politics of the games or the owners. Compairing the players that's all Bob. I am watching the double header with Atlanta today, 7 inning games. Ridiculous.
